It’s about time I mentioned Marmite: a British yeast extract spread that is brown, sticky, salty, strong, and repulsive to most people I’ve met. But it’s one of my favorite things. My friend Kate introduced it to me several months ago, and after trying it I had to buy a jar of my own at Cost Plus (one of the few places it’s available in the United States).
Marmite is a good source of B vitamins, which are rumored to improve your mood and decrease stress. Lately, I have been inexplicably happy…perhaps it is because we have a working toaster again?!
Without further ado: How to correctly use Marmite:
1) Toast bread.
2) Butter bread.
3) With the butter knife, apply the thinnest possible layer of Marmite, especially if you’re a beginner. I cannot stress enough how little to use. You’ll find that if you like it, it’s kind of like a drug; you’ll have to add more Marmite each time.

I sometimes eat it on grilled cheese sandwiches too. I have yet to try Vegemite (which is an Australian yeast extract spread that apparently tastes diffferent) but I’m in the process of acquiring it.
